Bank of Lithuania Online Store

The official Bank of Lithuania e-commerce platform for selling euro coins and numismatic products online and through physical branches. The solution covers the full sales cycle—from catalogue, pricing and limited-stock management to orders, reservations, payments, delivery, invoicing and point-of-sale transactions. It also supports auction-style sales and large, short-term traffic spikes when limited-edition coins become available to a high number of buyers simultaneously.

The challenge

The task

The Bank of Lithuania needed a specialised numismatic sales platform supporting both standard and auction-style sales, with centralised management of the catalogue, pricing, stock, reservations, purchase limits, orders, payments and point-of-sale transactions.

The main challenge was handling sudden traffic spikes when limited-edition coins are released and large numbers of collectors initiate purchases within minutes. The system had to prevent stock and per-customer purchase limits from being exceeded while maintaining stable performance.

To address this, the solution introduced queueing and performance controls. Once a defined load threshold is reached, purchase operations are placed in a queue and processed at a controlled rate. Reservations, actual stock levels and purchase limits are managed in real time, ensuring a reliable and fair sales process even during peak demand.

The result

Bank of Lithuania Numismatic Online Store

A centralised Bank of Lithuania e-commerce platform was developed for selling coins and other numismatic products online and at Bank of Lithuania branches. The solution covers coin catalogue and issue-plan management, sales start times, pricing, real-time stock, customer registration and authentication, shopping baskets, reservations, order administration, electronic payments, delivery and collection, invoice generation, purchase history, and customer and administrator management. The platform integrates with KDIS, VIISP/e-government gateways, payment systems, the Bank of Lithuania customer register and other external solutions. A specialised mechanism for selling limited-edition products enables precise sales start dates and times, real-time stock synchronisation, time-limited reservations and the automatic return of items to sale when checkout is not completed. Each product can have an individual per-customer purchase limit, while the system controls the total quantity ordered across multiple concurrent orders. This ensures that limited coin issues are distributed according to defined sales rules. A core technical component is the load-management and transaction-queue mechanism. When a large number of buyers access the store simultaneously and the defined infrastructure load limit is reached, purchase operations are automatically queued and processed at a controlled rate. This protects the system from overload and ensures consistent processing of critical stock-reservation and basket operations during peak demand. The specification also included performance and load testing with 300 concurrent users. The platform also supports auction-style sales, allowing fixed-price and competitively priced sales to be managed within the same technology environment. Combined with high-performance architecture, reservation controls and purchase-limit management, this created a solution tailored to the specific requirements of numismatic sales, where reliable operation during short periods of extreme demand is as important as core e-commerce functionality.
